Using MicroCore

  • MicroCore is flexible by design, and it works best when each block’s core structure is used consistently. Math can run as a stand-alone component. The literacy and project blocks are built to work together, so they are strongest used as a pair.

  • The core is Grades 3 to 5. Because the work is leveled, a student reading below grade level can still enter every lesson, and a student working above grade level can extend it, in the same room.

  • No. MicroCore is designed so you can teach it well without prior training in the science of reading or any specialized model. Each component comes with clear routines, structured lessons, and built-in guidance. If you already have that training, the program will feel aligned with what you know. If you do not, it will guide you step by step, and most teachers find their confidence grows quickly because the structure makes strong teaching moves visible and repeatable.

  • Yes. It was designed for exactly that room. Word study is leveled to each student’s decoding and spelling needs, not their grade, so a struggling reader and an advanced reader both get what they need. Daily reading is matched to the student. Writing uses the same task with different expectations for length, complexity, and support, so no one needs a separate assignment. Shared texts, discussions, and projects keep the whole group in one experience, while predictable routines free you to pull small groups and push the students who are ready. The science of reading

  • Yes, in both its design and its daily instruction. Literacy Foundations Practice teaches phonics, spelling, and morphology explicitly and in sequence. Students read at their level every day to build fluency and automatic word recognition, with structured fluency routines built into the week. Knowledge and vocabulary grow through shared, content-rich texts, and reading, writing, and discussion all work on the same ideas, so comprehension and vocabulary transfer into writing. The aim is not coverage, but consistent, cumulative practice that produces independent readers.

  • Most of those programs focus on one piece, usually phonics or intervention. MicroCore is a complete system where word study, reading, writing, and content learning work together every day. The phonics instruction is explicit, but students apply it immediately in real reading and writing connected to meaningful content. It is built for one teacher with a multi-age group, not for small single-grade rooms with extra staff, with predictable routines and independent work built in. And it emphasizes daily, cumulative practice, not just new lessons, which is what fluency and retention actually require.

Rigor and standards

  • The curriculum is mapped to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, Florida’s B.E.S.T. standards, and the Common Core State Standards, at every grade in the band. A full standards alignment is available for every week.

  • Yes. Religious institutions, practices, and figures appear only as historical or cultural fact, and no single faith tradition is centered.
