Why the design works

Built on the research, aligned to the standards.

MicroCore is not an opinion about how children learn. The design rests on established research in reading, knowledge, and instruction, and the curriculum is mapped to the standards your state already holds you to.

SCIENCE OF READING

Built on the Science of Reading

Literacy starts with the skills underneath it.

The Literacy Foundations Practice strand follows structured literacy aligned to the science of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding taught explicitly and in sequence, not left to chance. Students who need those skills receive them directly, while the rest of the literacy block builds comprehension, writing, and discussion on top.

🔤

Phonemic Awareness

Developing the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken language.

📖

Phonics

Connecting letters and sounds through explicit, systematic instruction.

🧩

Decoding

Building confident readers through structured decoding practice.

💬

Comprehension

Applying foundational skills to meaningful reading, writing, and discussion.

KNOWLEDGE BUILDING

Built to Build Knowledge

Comprehension is not a free-floating skill. It grows out of what a child knows.

Each domain is content-rich and sequenced, so students spend weeks building real knowledge about a subject and the vocabulary that comes with it. That knowledge is what lets them read, reason, and write with depth in MicroCore and in everything they read next.

📚

Build Knowledge

Students develop meaningful background knowledge through rich, connected content.

💬

Grow Vocabulary

New concepts introduce academic language naturally throughout the domain.

🧠

Deepen Understanding

Students connect ideas and strengthen comprehension over several weeks.

✍️

Read & Write

Knowledge supports stronger reading, writing, discussion, and reasoning.

🎯

Apply Learning

Students confidently apply what they know in authentic learning experiences.

STANDARDS ALIGNMENT

Aligned to the Standards That Matter

Rigor you can defend to a parent, a board, or an authorizer.

The curriculum is mapped to three frameworks at every grade in the band: Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards, and the Common Core State Standards. Every domain is built to that alignment, and every new domain ships with it.

📘

TEKS

  • Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • Grade-band alignment
  • Mapped across every domain

Florida B.E.S.T.

  • Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking
  • Aligned by grade band
  • Integrated into every domain
🌎

Common Core

  • Common Core State Standards
  • Real grade-level expectations
  • Consistent curriculum mapping

A Full Standards Alignment Is Available for Every Week.

The work at each ELA Stage is anchored to specific grade-band standards, ensuring every learning task reflects authentic grade-level expectations rather than broad estimates of ability.

LEARNING PRINCIPLES

Designed Around How Learning Works

The lesson design follows principles with a long research record.

01

A Cognitive Ladder in Every Anchor Task

Students move from concrete understanding to abstract thinking so no learner is asked to leap ahead before they are ready.

02

Gradual Release of Independence

Students move from structured guidance toward independent learning across the domain, with support intentionally reduced over time rather than removed all at once.

03

Thinking Decoupled From Reading

Students can engage with important ideas even before they are able to independently read every passage, allowing every learner to participate in meaningful thinking.
